How We Test
Many people have asked us how we go about our work. What do test procedures involve? How do we know our recommendations are reliable?

Here are some of the answers....
Our surveyors visit shops and ask sales staff what's available, what's popular and what features people are looking for. They then search online for the various products and see what is popular in the search engines. For many products we also get product sales information from a market research company.

From this we decide on our selection criteria. Sometimes it's based on popularity: we're currently testing dvd copying software, since this is the highest-selling segment of the dvd market. Or we may choose to online books on a particular topic, for example, Dog Training Books.

How we decide
One product may be very efficient in some areas, but fail badly in others. Another might perform well in other areas best.

To get an overall rating we weight the different aspects of the test according to their importance. For dvd copying, DVD Copying Quality results account for 40 percent of the overall score; ease of use, speed, tech support and feature set each account for 15 percent.

How we check
At the end of each test we send the online distributors a report on their products. This gives them a chance to comment on the results and to confirm that the products are still on the market. Our surveyors go back online to collect current prices.

A revised draft is then sent to verification. Our verifier checks all the facts in the article back to the original source of the information and the editors' comments.

And the final outcome? Read our DVD Copying Review to see an example!
